Scientist Wins Bet with Tractor Beam

In a recent article published in the journal Science, physicist Professor John Pendry and his team at Imperial College in London report the successful levitation of a two-inch metal disk using nothing more than an electromagnetic field. The feat was accomplished as part of a wager with colleagues at the University of Sussex, who claimed such an achievement was impossible.

Chairman Boehlert and Members of the Committee: thank you for giving me this opportunity to discuss my work on electromagnetic tractor beams with you today. My name is John Pendry and I am a physicist at Imperial College London. I have worked on developing electromagnetic tractor beams for about 10 years now.

At first blush, it may seem strange that physicists would spend time trying to develop a device that does nothing more than move things from one place to another. But there are actually many potential applications for tractor beams that go well beyond just moving things around. For example, they could be used to clean up environmental spills, salvage debris from damaged ships or other structures, or even assemble delicate structures piece by piece.

But perhaps the most exciting potential application of tractor beams is in transportation. While much work still needs to be done before we can achieve this goal, I believe it is within reach given recent advances in our understanding of how electromagnetism works.
